A diagnosis of cancer can be a painful, lonely experience.  When faced with overwhelming adversity and challenges, we often find that the smallest gestures make the biggest impact on our lives.  The Satchels of Caring Foundation has been committed to supporting those with cancer in the Pittsburgh region since the organization initiated its program in 2003 as the CREW Pittsburgh Foundation.

We use high quality donated fabrics to stitch unique
Satchels of Caring, which are filled with therapeutic and inspirational contents, such as a soft turban, scarf, support literature, a journal donated by volunteers and friends, and many other items.  Since 2003, the Foundation has handcrafted and assembled over 4,500 Satchels for distribution through local hospitals and treatment/support programs.  In 2009, our program distributed over 1,000 satchels and anticipates distribution of another 1,000 in 2010.

There is no application process and no charge to receive a Satchel of Caring, just a request from the intended recipient or a friend or organization on behalf of the recipient. The Foundation covers the production cost of each Satchel by fundraising and donations.  Our program is about shared experiences and hands-on participation in support of those with cancer.
