Community Events
Our inaugural Bags, Bellinis, & Brunch Event held on April 18, 2010 was successful on all fronts due to the support and generosity of our sponsors, donors, and attendees. All enjoyed a relaxing afternoon while sampling the delicious brunch and socializing with friends. Our Honorary Chair, Peggy Finnegan of WPXI-TV, inspired our guests and volunteers alike with her kind words and personal story. The event generated over $5,500 in proceeds, which exceeded our expectations and will enable us to fill 190 Satchels of Caring!

Community Action Day – Boy Scout Troop 2 – Tuesday April 13, 2010
In Fall 2009, 16-year-old Alex Speidel, Eagle Scout candidate, submitted a formal proposal to the Scout organization to create a male version of our Satchels of Caring. After receiving project approval he contacted national companies (including Unilever) to donate products including toiletries, obtained hats from a non-profit, and solicited gym bags from an Eagle Scout to house the contents. Members of his home Troop 2 made leather key chains and joined to assemble the bags that will be distributed by the Cancer Caring Center in Pittsburgh and the Arnold Palmer Cancer Pavilion in Latrobe. The satchels also contain a CD and inspirational and support resource materials. Echoing their female counterpart, the satchels are a morale booster; a tangible get well wish for patients undergoing treatment. Alex’s comprehensive project begun last summer amounted to 165 hours and yielded 100 bags in April. As he awaits official notification that he has fulfilled the requirements for Eagle Scout, rest assured that cancer patients are already giving him a thumbs up!

Gateway High School Benefit Dance - Friday April 17, 2009
On Friday, April 17, 2009, CREW Foundation participated in a benefit dance at Gateway High School which helped raise money for Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure. Two seniors from Gateway, Megan Bertoline and Maria Hyzy coordinated the fundraiser as part of The Future is Mine student group. Over 100+ students and chaperones attended the benefit. The night focused around the ‘Cure’ which began with a few words from a breast cancer survivor from Susan G. Komen. The students also had the opportunity to write letters to patients, purchase accessories from the American Cancer Society and create hand-made tags. The hand-made tag materials were supplied by the Foundation. We cut, assembled and embellished the tags so they could be attached to the satchels like a luggage tag. The event was a success with the students raising over $600 for the Cure.
Community Action Day - Susan G. Komen/Girl Scouts Day - March 7, 2009
During this community action day, Girl Scouts qualified to earn their In The Pink Breast Cancer Awareness patch. The girls and their mothers were invited to work on satchels while taking part in a short breast cancer awareness educational program presented by Komen for the Cure. CREW Members and the volunteers cut and sorted fabrics for our "Satchels of Caring" and sewed buttons on completed bags.

Survivor Day Conference - March 14, 2009
On March 14, 2009, CREW Pittsburgh Foundation board members Eileen Iorio and Kathy Graham took part in the Survivor Day Conference hosted by the American Cancer Society. They explained to many of the attendees about our program and how the satchels are made and distributed. Several attendees came over to the Satchels of Caring table to express their heartfelt gratitude for receiving a bag and some eager to give back, signed our volunteer list.
